A World We Dare To Imagine Pt. 3

As mentioned in my last post, I think there is a huge disparity between African American children and young adults in low-income areas similar to the neighborhood surrounding USC. Thankfully, I was born into a family that had the privilege of offering extensive and quality education to me, but many others are born into broken families and gang violence. To decrease young children's and adults’ dependency on family gang ties, I want to create an after-school program for children and adults in low-income areas.

SecondHome will be a non-profit organization offering students a safe space to study, relax, and feel protected. The facility will be equipt with quiet spaces for students to focus on their schoolwork, free resources such as tutoring, mental health counseling, and even a place for these young adults to sleep. Every day, the facility will have afterschool snacks and meals for children to ensure they get the nutrition they need. This will offer them a safe space to feel cared for and supported.

Besides giving students the necessities such as a safe place to be, food, and mental support, I want SecondHome to be a hang-out spot for young kids and adults to meet others within their communities and make friends. This is important to foster a comfortable environment for kids to view this facility as their second home so they will spend time there and surround themselves with positive figures.

I aim to establish the first SecondHome location in South Central Los Angeles, strategically located near USC. This will allow USC students to visit the facility, lend a hand with tutoring, or simply spend time with the children in the surrounding community. SecondHome is designed to offer a safe space for young adults and provides USC students with a chance to establish meaningful connections with the community. They can offer valuable advice on navigating the complex college application process and rest any worries that college is an unattainable dream for low-income students.

Our facility will have a young staff and a nurturing house mom who will serve as positive role models and trusted figures for the children in their need. This way, the children can rely on these influential figures to provide support and guidance during difficult times.

I strongly believe that AMDP should invest in SecondHome to expand our facilities into other low-income neighborhoods. Our mission to empower children and young adults who face socioeconomic or ethnic barriers is a huge step toward reducing gang violence in these communities. By investing in our cause, AMDP will significantly impact the lives of hundreds of low-income kids, giving them a chance to break free from the cycle of poverty. SecondHome is dedicated to creating a positive environment where kids feel safe, nurtured, and inspired to reach their full potential.
